What Does Nostradamus Have to Do with Telephone Psychics?

Nostradamus (1503-1566) was a famous philosopher who predicted the defeat of Napoleon, the rise of the Nazi party, the assassinations of both Kennedy brothers. He also foretold of the Great Fire of London and the terrorist attacks of 9/11. He allegedly also foretold of the Obama presidency. Several of his predictions, including the end of the world and changes in planetary alignments – have yet to see fruition.

It is easy to find ways to attribute Nostradamus’s almost cryptic messages to several current events. Much like radicals can take a Bible verse and use it to disparage homosexuality or the separating of races. This is a hindsight bias that people refer to as retroactive clairvoyance. It’s the art of looking back after an event and seeing prophecies or predictions that foresaw the event. Usually, these revelations are vague and use obscure language that has become manipulated. Telephone psychics use your information in kind of the same ways. They are experts at applying selective thinking (disregarding facts that don’t fit your persona) and sensing your emotions and the current state of affairs by tapping into your mental energy.

Take for instance this quote from Nostradamus’s works:

“At forty-five degrees the sky will burn,
Fire to approach the great new city:
In an instant, a great scattered flame will leap up,
When one will want to demand proof of the Normans.”

His Predictions Have Many Interpretations

Advocates of retroactive clairvoyance clearly see the references to fire and terror from the sky. They argue the “forty-five degrees” is a clear indication of New York City, which is around 40° 5′ N latitude. For the devout follower of the philosopher, this relative content is an obvious reference to the attack on the World Trade Center. Many have also speculated that there are clear references to Osama Bin Laden in the works of Nostradamus.

Nostradamus was an occultist. He was as popular alive as he is now. People traveled from around the world for his readings. Just like modern telephone psychics, he used a combination of divine inspiration and astrological study for his readings. Ironically, many of his predictions about his clients’ futures were in error. Perhaps he wasn’t aware his gift wasn’t looking into the near future, but centuries ahead.

In many ways, retroactive clairvoyance is a way to understand the randomness that so permeates our lives. There can be psychological comfort in taking a senseless disaster and finding evidence to establish everything is part of a bigger plan. It’s a relief to think our futures aren’t some dark entity we cannot free ourselves from but rather it is sometimes only a telephone call away!
